Sharing our lives through writing is a very special thing. It’s an act that touches our deepest inner part and allows us to feel every little detail of our inner movements. Our memories merge with our feelings and allow us to pin down the flow of words erupting and overflowing from our heart and mind, sometimes subdued, sometimes imperious.

We are the memory that floats atop an unknown sea, from a system jagged of sensations, feelings and drive that sometimes we try to condense into actions but that always remains, in the words of the great psychoanalyst James Hillman, “wrapped in the cradle of the language that surprises us and belongs to the realms of life and beyond”.

To listen to that subtle voice that can constantly describe us it’s an incredibly effective way to get to know ourselves, to enter our most intimate universe and make it become a mark, ink on the paper of our skin, an incessant mirror of growth and evolution.

“After you have settled yourself in a place as favorable as possible to the concentration of your mind upon itself, have writing materials brought to you. Put yourself in as passive, or receptive, a state of mind as you can. Forget about your genius, your talents, and the talents of everyone else. Keep reminding yourself that literature is one of the saddest roads that lead to everything. Write quickly, without any preconceived subject, fast enough so that you will not remember what you're writing and be tempted to reread what you have written. The first sentence will come spontaneously, so compelling is the truth that with every passing second there is a sentence unknown to our consciousness which is only crying out to be heard.”

- André Breton, from “Manifesto of Surrealism”, 1924

About your Teacher

Barbara Martini is a published author, playwright and counselor. She has been teaching in Italy for over 25 years, as well as working as a registered holistic Counselor Supervisor.

She devoted a lot of her time gathering stories from women that she met in the course of her life, these stories became the subject of her highly-acclaimed book “Hidden Women” (Donne Nascoste) published by Infinito Edizioni. The book was adapted into a successful theater play.

For many years, Barbara has enjoyed a wonderful career as a professional singer/songwriter and music teacher in Florence. She wrote and produced the album “In-canto”, original music created for meditating.

Barbara Martini regularly teaches workshops, private lessons and lectures in schools on different subjects: vibrational energy, shamanism, holistic counseling and dedicated workshops like “Writing as a Salvation: A story worth telling (yours)” , presented for the first time online for Yangchenma Arts & Music.

“To live a reality immersed in the sacred is for many people an abstract thought, something only perceivable beyond ordinary life, a blurry place halfway between “interesting” and “unexplainable”, something hard to obtain, contain, express. But this force pulling us up represents us since the dawn of time, it defines us, moves us towards new horizons, towards the adventures that we create and build through our daily decisions, wish after wish, wound after wound. Love after love.

This is what I want to talk about: the thread that can enable us to overcome any fear and bring us above what we already know through simplicity: an encounter, a word, a look, an emphatic presence sometimes becoming a touch that can caress our essence - our most “sacred” part, even when we don’t notice. If this contact happens, if the alchemy happens, then something wakes up and it begins to tell a story, it begins to tell us how we should live to allow ourselves the space to welcome that feeling again and again. For ourselves, the other, for the world as we know it. For that sacred passage from a heart to another heart.

That’s where we really begin the journey, a delicate and strong journey towards the temple of our truth.”
